MLHS-CUW Cross Country Classic 2016
Concordia University, Wisconsin

Though the sun was a bit hot, considering that it's still only early September, and that we've had much hotter days before, it wasn't a bad day for a cross country meet.  This was our first "real" meet, in that it was a full 5 kilometers (3.1 miles), and it was truly cross country (as opposed to 'cross the school yard), as you will see by the pictures below.  As a team, the boys got 5th overall out of ten teams, so that's not a bad start at all to the season.  As far as times go, it's anybody's guess.  Several of the runners said the timer showed something different than what the printed results say, so I'm not sure how accurate the report will be today.  But we do know for sure that two of our runners earned medals for being in the top 15, so that's exciting!  Looking forward to a fun season watching this team grow.
 Scenes around the campus:

Have you ever wondered what it looks like once those runners get back into the woods?  I did, and today I found out!

I saw some movement in the middle of the field.  The animal looked big enough to be a small deer.  Out curiosity, I zoomed in for a closer look...

Then it lifted up its head...oops!  Not a deer at all!

Someone needs to tell our hosts that "Walther Lutheran" no longer exists!  Old habits die hard, I guess.

Our assistant coach, Eric, represented us well by placing 4th place in the open race.
Great job, Eric!

Time for the "real" races:  Boys are first up today.

There were 133 runners today...that's a lot of competition!

 HERE THEY COME!
Luis & Julio

Jaylin

Captain Jack

Gus

Look!  I think he's actually smiling!!!

Aaron & Darryl

Jake

Quang

Luke

Xavier (aka "Big Skin")
 Coming into the finish line:
Luis came in 12th overall, finishing 3 seconds faster than last year's race here at Mequon.  Way to go!

Julio was just 2 places behind him, finishing either in 18:22 (printed results) or 18:17 (what was on the timer when he crossed the line).  Truthfully, it doesn't matter because either time is MORE THAN 3 MINUTES FASTER than last year's race.  WOW!  Watch out, everyone!  This guy is going somewhere fast!
Jaylin was 29th overall, finishing in 19:16.  Great job!

Jack was in 36th place and his time is also a mystery (either 19:05 or 19:33).  Either way, super run!  It's great to have you back, Jack! (He was unable to run this race last year due to an injury.)

David was 5th for the team, finishing in 20:04.  Our top 5 runners finished in the top 1/3 of the field.  Great job!!!

Gus was next to cross the finish line in 20:23.  This was ~ 29 seconds faster than last year's race.  Fantastic!

Aaron completed the course in 21:44.  Impressive!  I believe Aaron's goal is to be among the top 7 varsity runners...guess who achieved that goal today???  Kudos!

Jacob wasn't far behind, finishing in 21:45.
Great job on your first 5K, Jacob!!!

Darryl finished up in 22:18.  This was also his first 5K.
Way to go!

Quang completed his course in 23:17...also a first time 5k runner.  Impressive!

Luke looks a little worried about the runner behind him, but shouldn't be.  He finished in 25:02.  This was also his 1st 5K...and he's only been practicing for under 2 weeks!  Wow!

Xavier ran neck and neck with his competitor, both of them finishing in 27:11.  Way to keep pushing 'til the end!

Next up: Our two girls, Addy & Claudia

There were 90 girls running in this race.

Claudia finished up in  26:51.  Last year she finished in 28:43, so she has improved nearly 2 minutes!  Way to go, Claudia!

This was Addy's first 5K.  She finished in 30:06.  Way to hang tough and stay strong til the end!!!

Time to head to the infield to await the results:

Our 12th & 14th place finishers: Great job!

Next meet is on September 10 at IC Catholic Prep.  See you there!
