2016 Cross Country Banquet:
Celebrating!

Another great season followed by another great XC banquet.  Thanks to Mrs. Simzyk for pulling this one together.  Great pizza!!  And a special thanks to Coaches Goffron, Sonja, and Eric for all the hard work and commitment that you put into making this year a success.  It was a joy to watch this journey.  Now it's your turn to enjoy the pics from the banquet.  And hopefully we'll be celebrating a back-to-back-to-back victory next year as well!  Keep running, everyone!

Hungrily awaiting the pizzas

Time to eat!

As is our tradition, after the meal, Coach Goffron took some time to honor/recognize/make fun of  each of the athletes.

Our Seniors:
(All quotes are the property of Jack Simzyk.  I take neither credit nor blame for anything that is said about the runners after this point.  I don't even understand half of it anyway - too many inside jokes.)

Aaron Feltz- "Sore loser when it comes to ping pong…he’s just not as good as he thinks he is at it. Has a secret diary."
Jaylin Williams- "He’s just a baby shower boy. Still looks like Marty the Zebra from Madagascar."
Each of the seniors received a special gift from Coach, who requested that Jaylin open his immediately.  Apparently Jaylin drank a lot of eggnog when they went down State.  By the look on his face, it's quite clear this brings him a lot of joy!

Jack Simzyk- "While he may be pretty good at running, he’s even better at getting finessed out of $200."
 JUNIORS:

Claudia Sosa- "One of the only two female runners on the team (mad props and respect) and probably the most mature person overall on the team."
Luis Dieguez- "Good and cool. The only man to ever read Aaron’s secret diary. He’s a tough guy, but he once cried in public in front of 5 million people and millions more watching at home."

Steven Wagner- "Better known as “Swagner”. Spends most of his time in a cardboard box."

Gus Viise- "Still the nicest person in the history of the world, but yet he got injured again. The man does not deserve this. SOMEONE WILL PAY! (Again) (This time, it’s personal)"
 SOPHOMORES:

Addy Rieger- "One of the only two female runners on the team (mad props and respect). Gave Julio permission to go to State with the boys (Thanks Addy!)"

Julio Padilla- *READ IN JULIO VOICE* "Always forgets spikes, rides the magic school bus, has church on Saturday, and plans on being one half of the first ever co-captain couple next season. Wants to drink 2 liters of Mountain Dew again, but needs Addy’s permission first."

This is Jack doing his best impression of Julio's voice...

Nathaniel Nunez- "Too squirrelly…like all the time (except that ONE time). Left Aaron’s house early because he was scared of the dark. Property of Darryl Norwood, Jr."
Sorry for the blurry picture.   :-(

Rafael Serpico- "Probably a part-time dank meme lord when he’s not running XC."

Xavier Skinner- "Better known as “Big Skin”. Always apologizing for no reason."

Luke Mason- "Not much to say. He’s just a quiet guy who goes about his business and gets stuff done. However, the legendary Mitch Kruckenberg once thought Luke was a frog."
Freshmen:

Darryl Norwood Jr- "Lil freshman, but got to run with the big boys this year. Jaylin Williams’s son."

Jacob Czubernat- "Has the most lit last name on the team. Looks like Shaun White."

Quang Dang- "Drinks all of the water. Asks questions…a LOT of questions…"

Isiah Tyler Jr- "Upside: Good runner with lots of potential. Downside: Is one of the most freshmany freshman on the team (that shouldn’t be an issue next season though…we hope)."

Trevon Lockhart- "Most likely to be found in his backyard."

Coach Eric- "Used to be cool and fun, but then he became a coach. Joins some dude from 1982 and Jack Simzyk as only the 3rd coach in Walther history to take a team to state. (G$ still trying to join this elite group)"

Coach Sonja- "Must have a lot of patience considering she put up with all of us (including Eric) for the whole season."

Coach Goffron - "a.k.a. G$, a.k.a. Mr. Versatility- Principal, Dean, and only coach in Walther history to win back-to-back Regional Championships and make back-to-back State appearances. The man does it all."

Boys Cross Country

Class 1A State Finals

2016-17

Based on the pictures, it was a beautiful day!  Whether or not this is seen as a easy or hard course depends on the runner.  Some like it because it's flat all the way around; some don't like it because it's repetitive and definitely very crowded and easy to get boxed in.  But liking it or not, our Broncos did us proud today (and they beat their nemesis in the final showdown of the season!)

Our picture story begins the day before while still at Walther...

We are ready!

The big day...(Thanks to Mrs. Simzyk for taking the pictures!!!!)

Meeting an ex-Olympian!

Walther alumni here to cheer us on!  Thanks, Mitch!

Off they go!

Luis finished with a time of 16:16, 35 seconds faster than last year's run at State, and this was by far his best run EVER.  Way to be a rock star, Luis!!!

Jack, one of our seniors, did a stupendous job, tying with his PR for this year (16:45), proving that a little bit of thirst can go a long way!  So proud of you, Jack!

Last year, Coach Goffron brought Julio down with the team to State because he saw the potential for Julio to be part of yet another State-qualifying team.  Was he ever right!  Julio finished in 17:15, only 1 second slower than his personal PR for this year.
Way to go, Julio!

Our 2nd senior, Jaylin, also finished just a few seconds shy of his PR for this year.  He crossed the line in 17:22, only 7 spots behind Julio.  Congrats on a great year, Jaylin.  You'll be missed!
Oops...too fast for the photographer!

Nate bounced back wonderfully and finished in 18:10.  This was also his 2nd fastest time of the season.  You've been an amazing addition to the team, Nate.  Can't wait 'til next year!!!

Another runner who's faster than the photographer.

Darryl (aka "Big D") has been another key runner this season.  He finished his race in 18:35, which is a seasonal PR for him.  What a fantastic way to end the season, Darryl!!!

Sadly, not only did we miss getting a good pic of Gus running, he had to pull out of the race due to an injury.  So sorry, Gus, but you're still an important person on this team!!!  You'll make up for this next year, I'm sure!!!!

Miscellaneous pictures
(since I wasn't there I'm not 100% sure if they were taken before or after the race!):

Congrats on a job well done!!!!!
Stay tuned for word on our upcoming Cross Country banquet!
Go Broncos!!!
