First Meet of the Season:

Red Knight Invite
@ Concordia University, Mequon
August 30, 2014

The journey actually began the day before when the team climbed into two buses (outdated buses...they should say Walther Christian Academy, of course), and headed north to Concordia University, Mequon.

Upon arriving, they were able to jog the course, have a pasta dinner with the other arriving teams, and then hang out for the evening.  (I wasn't there, so that's as detailed as I can tell it, at the moment!).

How much sleep everyone got is anyone's guess!!!

The next morning...

For those of you who have never been there, Concordia's campus is located on the shore of Lake Michigan.  Part of the runners' course has the shoreline in sight.  Beautiful!

For the first race of the day, the team actually got to be on the sidelines and cheer on the participants in the Open Run, in particular...

 ...Coach Goffron!

Time is on the left.  He came in 6th overall.  Great job!!!

Next up:  The girls.  We're excited to have a team of six this year.  At the end of the summer, we were not even sure we'd have the minimum amount to make a team (5). So a big welcome to our incoming freshmen:  Jennyfer, Lauren & Claudia!!!

Warming up.

And as tradition would have it, every race begins with a prayer...

...and a cheer.

And of course, some final words of wisdom from the coach.

The Walther girls all got off to a great start in the beginning.

After the first mile, going into the back woods...

Into the final stretch:

Coming in 11th place overall.  Great job, Lauren!

An 18th place finisher.

Finishing 54 seconds faster than her 5K from last year.

Well run!

You should be proud of yourself!

Now we all know that God does NOT make mistakes, but it was almost as if He realized a bit too late that the girls' race was way too hot and the sun was beating down on them way too strongly, so He lightened the load for the boys by bringing in some clouds along with a cool breeze and plenty of shade, lowering the temperature by several degrees.

It was either that, or He just knew that girls are tougher than boys and the boys were going to need a little bit of extra help.  Ha ha!

You decide!!!

So now, with a more comfortable setting, it's time for the boys to run:

 They're off!!!

Hmmmmm.  Either Eric is off to a very good start, or he just made everyone mad and they're chasing him away!

(I couldn't get everyone in this first pass because it was too crowded, so my apologies to those that I missed.)

Into the woods...

The final stretch...

1st Place...from start to finish!  He finished 40 seconds faster than his race in Mequon last year.

Another 18th place finisher!!  Jaylin took 15 seconds off his time from last year.

25th place overall!

28th place!!

Well run, Elvis!! (Sorry, couldn't resist!  Does anyone else see the resemblance???)

30th place!!

This man took over two minutes off his time from last year's race here!

Super job!

Nicely run!

Way to go!

Yahoo!

Looking good!

Fun Facts:  Our top 5 boy runners were all under 30th place.  (And our top 7 runners all beat Coach Goffron's time.)  Plus, we had two runners in the top twenty for both the girls and the boys teams.

The first fact is what earned the boys  4th place overall as a team!!!

After a nice (free!) lunch, it was finally time for the awards ceremony.

Waiting on the infield...

Thumbs up for Lauren's 11th place medal!!!!

Top 15 girls.

And now the first place finisher for the boys...
Good sportsmanship!  Congratulating the others.

Top 15 boys.

Our two medal winners.

What a sweet picture.  A proud coach with his top finisher.  But wait.  What's with all the smiles and giggles?  And what's that blue thing in the background???

(This is the place where there's supposed to be a picture of the team dowsing Eric with a huge bucket of ice water!!!!)

And this is what it feels like to be dowsed with ice water!!!

I'm not sure if this is motivation for the others to do better or not.  They'll probably just let Eric keep on winning!  But I'd be careful everyone, because I'm guessing Eric knows how to plan for revenge!

Great day!
A big thanks to all the parents who made it to the meet.  And thanks to Anders for his special appearance to cheer us on.  We miss you!

Next race day is Saturday, September 6, at
Crystal Lake South High School.
(I believe that is Coach Goffron's old stomping grounds.)

See you there!!!
