2015 IHSA Class 1A
Regional Cross Country Meet hosted by
Aurora Christian High School

 Wow!  What a day!
Wait, this calls for a little background music.  Everyone sing,
"We are the champions, my friends..."

But let's get back to the beginning of the story...

It started out a bit hazy with some threatening on and off showers.

We're always glad that the athletes only run past this hill, not up it!

The sounds and sights of fall filled the air.
The final bridge to cross before heading toward the finish line...oh, no...it's starting to rain again.

As the rain persisted, the team stayed close to the tent as they stretched in preparation for today's competition.  We realized that the mud could potentially be a problem, but we also knew that today was about places, not times (And it was; only 2 runners actually achieved their PR today.).  There was a mix of excitement and nervousness in the air as we awaited the first race.

Final instructions from Coach Goffron.
As usual, first up: Varsity Girls

It was still drizzling a little bit at the beginning of the girls' race, but thankfully, it stopped after about 10 minutes and remained clear for the rest of the morning.

Final words from Coach
TAMRON
Sadly, Tammy was our only girl runner today.

But being our only girl runner did not slow her down!  Tammy finished 20th overall, which qualified her to advance as an individual to Sectionals.  Her official time was 22:13.  This is a new PR for her.  She is one of only two Bronco athletes to obtain a PR today. Way to go, Tammy.  Stupendous effort!!!!

Next up: Varsity Boys:

Unfortunately, Jose had to pull out due to shin splint problems, but Jack stepped in to fill the gap.

Goals for the race:  Top runner (Luis) to be in 5th place; top 5 scoring runners to be in the top 18 overall.  Hmmmm...wonder if we can do it!    :-)

LUIS

Luis was the 3rd runner to come out of the woods just after the 1 mile marker.  He maintained that position for the entire race, earning himself a medal and surpassing Coach Goffron's goal of being in 5th place.  His final time was 16:35.  Amazing!!!

ERIC
(Yes, Eric is in this picture.  Sorry I don't have a better one!!)

Eric was part of the 3-man pack that stuck together for the first mile and a quarter.  After that he pulled away and worked toward the 5th spot overall, earning himself a medal.  He achieved a new PR today by finishing in 16:48. Wow!

MITCH

Mitch pushed hard and was able to finish in the top ten overall.  His final time was 17:11.  Fantastic!!!

DAVID

David snuck up on the 3-man pack joining it just in time to see it disperse.  He worked his way into being the 4th Walther runner to cross the finish line, finishing 11th overall.  His time was 17:19.  Super!

JAYLIN

Jaylin was our final scoring runner, finishing in 17:25 and in 13th place, 5 places ahead of what Coach Goffron was hoping for.  Talk about exceeding his expectations!!!!  What a team!

KOBE

Kobe, with Mr. Kruckenberg looking on, finished 6th for the team, working hard to pass as many other runners as he could.  His final time was 18:13.  Great job, Kobe!
JACK
Jack found out he was going to be running today only about 1-1/2 hours before the meet!  In spite of not having much time to prep mentally, he ran a solid race and represented Walther well.  His time was 19:01.  Kudos!

Our varsity runners, post-race, both sweaty....

 ...and muddy!!!

By this time we were pretty sure that we were #1!!!

After the cooldown, it was time to celebrate with donuts!
    Finally, the awards ceremony!!!

As we suspected, Tammy had managed to earn herself a Sectional-qualifying spot!

The 5 individual qualifiers.

What a way to end your senior year, Tammy!  Congrats!!!

Eric receiving his 5th place medal.

And Luis receiving his 3rd place medal. Walther athletes made up 2/5 of the top 5 runners!
It was overheard that Luis also won the "Best Jacket at Regionals" award.  I think the prize was that he gets to keep the jacket.   :-)

The top five finishers.

Then finally the announcement we were waiting for:

7th place: Chicago Hope with 186 points
6th place:  Joliet Catholic Academy with 129 points
5th place: Lisle with 120 points
4th place: ICCP with 102 points
3rd place: Westmont with 72 points
2nd place: Timothy Christian with 59 points

And in 1st place with only 34 points,
our Regional Champions...

Walther Christian Academy!!!

 The celebration erupted!

Proud Coach with his team.

He may not look happy, but he IS happy!!!

If you look closely, you'll notice that Mr. Goffron's clothes are all wet.  The team "rewarded" him by dousing him with cold water!!!! (He may not be quite as happy now!)
Final words of encouragement and praise from Coach.
And then a flurry of pictures were taken before the plaque was whisked away by Coach Goffron.  Only a few of those pictures are represented here...

 Like father, like son!

Our top ten runners.

And of course one of David, simply because he's the photographer's son.    :-)  That's one of the perks of having this "job."
And in case anyone is wondering where it is now...

So, Coach Goffron, what are your expectations for next week?  We'd like to know so that the team can surpass those also!!!

Be sure to come out and cheer everyone on at Lisle next Saturday.

Well done, Broncos.
We're SOOOOOOO proud of you!!!!
